How We Grow
We use the best available techniques in hydroponics, aquaponics, and soil-based systems. Hydroponics is the soil-less growing of plants in a nutrient rich solution, while aquaponics is combining aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (soil-less growing of plants) together. The soil-based techniques we employ include raised beds and container growing. Combining these methods allows us to use water efficiently, while providing optimum nutrients to each plant.
Our aquaponics system provides the perfect environment for rooting cuttings of exceptional flowers and providing nutrients to both the hydroponic system and the soil growing techniques.
Our hydroponics system (float bed method) provides a consistent growing environment for lettuce and leafy greens that is very low maintenance. The float beds at our greenhouse were crafted by repurposing cinder blocks that were left on site.
Our growing containers include standard 10x20 trays for growing microgreens, 5 gallon buckets and bags for edible flowers, tomatoes and cucumbers, and larger containers crafted from IBC totes. We start with a professional grower’s mix for the microgreens that is composted after its first use. After it is has been composted it is used to help fill the larger containers.
Our raised beds are currently being used to grow baby root vegetables, nasturtiums and snap peas for flowers. The original soil in the greenhouse needed some serious amendment. For the root vegetable bed, we used a mix of topsoil and compost from local restaurants to amend the soil. As our business grows, so will our compost pile that we can then use to amend our soil.
